Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003

Lower price, much better features - released Nov/03

This is the third edition of Microsoft's Small Business Server (SBS) product.  It is a convenient, cost-effective and robust way for almost any small business to buy their Windows Server software, with additional features to allow you to host your own mail server, all for less than the Windows 2000 Server software.  The new version has a significantly lower price, and lots of new features.  Reviews in the press have been terrific, and we think it's a great package for our clients!

Windows Small Business Server 2003 comes in 2 editions:

Standard Edition:  The standard edition includes all of the following for one low price:

  • Windows Server 2003 for file, print, security, backup, etc.

  • Exchange Server 2003 for hosting e-mail, shared calendars and messaging

  • Windows SharePoint™ Services, a team communications and collaboration environment

  • Remote Access - tools for remote access and firewall tools to secure remote connections

  • 5 user licenses, expandable in increments of 5, up to a max of 75

  • Price is hundreds less than the "regular" Windows 2003 Server by itself!

Premium Edition:  Includes everything in the Standard Edition, PLUS adds

  • SQL Server 2000 for advanced database management and application hosting

  • ISA Server 2000 for web hosting

The premium edition is ideal for businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive workflow or similar applications.

The fine print:  Some of Microsoft's restrictions on using Small Business Server are as follows:

  • Can only have 1 Small Business Server in a domain; it does not support Active Directory trusts, and therefore will not work as a Branch Office server attached remotely to an Active Directory domain

  • Running Terminal Services to let remote users run applications:  It is not possible to run Terminal Services in Application Server mode on Windows Small Business Server 2003. This is a change from Small Business Server 2000. Running Terminal Services in Application Server mode on a domain controller may present a security risk to your network. If you want to use Terminal Services in Application Server mode, Microsoft recommends that you purchase an additional "regular" Windows Server 2003 license and install an additional server running Windows Server into the Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain

  • Can only run a maximum of 2 processors on the server

  • There are numerous ways to license this software;  call us to review which options would be most advantageous for your company

One additional hint ... when buying SBS, it's a good idea to make sure your server has a DVD drive, as it cuts the installation time by virtue of not having to swap out CDs.
